Currency by role
How currency works varies sharply by role. The full mechanics for each role have their own page; this is the at-a-glance comparison.
| Role | Cycle model | Source of currency |
|---|---|---|
| Flyer | Activity-based | Recent flight time |
| Instructor / Trainer / Examiner / Coach / Military | Cycle-based | Recurrent safety training |
The split matters because:
- Activity-based currency lapses when the flyer stops flying. Restoration happens through flight activity (with refresher training available when activity lapses for too long).
- Cycle-based currency lapses when the recurrent training lapses. Restoration happens by completing the next cycle’s safety training.
When currency lapses, open logbook entries transition to Not Current (see the lifecycle) and the member can’t progress further on those skills until currency is restored.
Per-role detail
- Flyer currency — activity-based, with renewal thresholds and checkpoints.
- Instructor currency — cycle-based, with carry-forward rules and approval-level updates.
- Currency training rules — expiry, recurrent deadlines, and recovery paths across the cycle-based roles (instructor, trainer, examiner, coach, military).
- Cycle rules — cycle periods, notification schedules, validity windows.
